What was the rationale Apple had for not letting you put files or mount disk icons on the desktop? Why did they move the HD's and all that stuff to a browser window? Seems like it doesn't really mirror a desktop as well as the old way.

First off, this belongs in the Mac OS X Discussion forum...but if you had gone their you would have answered your own questions anyways.

You can put files and place disk icons on the desktop, in Public Beta the disk icons were not on the desktop in the default config but you could change that yourself. In OS X Final they will be there by default.
