help anyone!
opera crashed. on rebooting Disk First Aid reported two probelm with the startup disk that it could NOT repair:
Problem 1. Wrapper Sytem file needs to be replaced,0,0.
Problem 2. Invalid PEOF, 104796,4.
Does anyone know what the Wrapper System file is, and is there a another utility that can repair these problems.

Disk First Aid seems funny to me. I notice it repairs stuff that Norton doesn't see but is really at being my only disk utilitie. Try running Norton or TechTool.

Something to do with protecting the integrity of the small block
sizes in the earliest versions of HFS+ (OS 8.1 etc).
Go to:
www.versiontracker.com
and download Apple Disk First Aid 8.6 especially for this purpose.
You can't use it from the disk you start up from - so either install
it on a RAM disk and run it from there - or put it on a Zip and run it from
there.
It only has to be run once to provide the protection, unless you ever
reinstall your OS.

i must be missing something. i have posted for help in several forums and i am getting the answer back to run Disk First Aid. I had already run Disk First Aid and it detected the errors and reported that "problems were found, but Disk First Aid cannot repair them." I thought this much was clear from my original post that i had already run Disk First Aid. Perhaps it wasn't, or am i missing the point?
thanks

There's Disk First Aid and then there's Disk First Aid.
What version of DFA are you using - because the download
for DFA 8.6 is specifically to address the wrapper problem.
As far as I know, that's its only purpose in life.

Hi jodo,
This Apple TIL will explain what the "wrapper" is. And this one will explain what PEOF means.
Disk First Aid can usually fix the wrapper problem but seldom the PEOF problem. Alsoft's "Disk Warrior" or Micromat's "TechTool Pro" would probably be able to fix both problems. These two applications can completely rebuild the directory on your hard disk.
Hope this helps,
Art

Disk Warrior from Alsoft is your only hope for that drive. The PEOF is a killer. Unexpected Physical End Of File. Trashed directory.
Disk Warrior will take care of it.
BTW I believe DFA 8.6 CAUSED the problem

a tech with TechTool Micromat Inc wrote the following:
If Disk First Aid 8.6 cannot fix the problem with the System file code in the HFS Wrapper, you should initialize the disk after making and testing a backup.
The System file code in the new wrapper will come from the disk from which you are booted when you initialize the disk. If you are booted from a Mac OS 8.5 or 8.6 install CD, there will be no problem with the new wrapper. If you are booted from a Mac OS 9.0.x disk, run Disk First Aid 8.6 after initializing the disk to fix the wrapper. I do not think third-party utilities fix this bug.
