what about hosts files on mac ??

(I'm french, sorry about my poor english)

just like as my Linux CPU does, I would like my Mac to be able to convert 'linux' into 192.168.0.10 (for example) ...
I saw into the TCP/IP control panel an option to select a "Hosts File".
I did, trying to select a file a wrote with the linux hosts file syntax. The result : "Line 1 contains invalid type 'mac' ".

Can you help me to find how to do it (the name link to an IP address) easily, or telling me about the right syntax ,or telling me an existing free utility I don't know.
