i wanted to use an image from a film as a desktop pic.
did a command-shift-3, snapped a pic &...nada (well, a picture of nothing, just a box).
anyway to get "in front" of the dvd player & snap away??

There was a trick where you take a snap shot of the screen while the DVD player is playing a movie. Set this snap shot as your background, and then play the movie on your DVD player in the background. The movie should play on the desktop. I might have gotten this wrong, let me know if it works.
