When I try to read a help file in OS9 by finding it in the hard drive I get a pop up window telling me that I can only open it from within the program assiociated with it.

How do I link a program to a help file or is there a way to the help file without starting the program?

Open Database alias "path to help file"
end tell

It won't work with all files.

Thanks but you're talking to a person who's been using a pc for years and has only had his mac for 2 months. Is this something to do with apple script??

You need to use the Help Browser to read the Help files. Open the application that you need help with and use the items found in the help menu. The specific information that they give about the application you are in is what is contained in the Help File icon you could not open through the Finder.

The applescript trick is just another way to activate the help Guide.
