This is a dumb question, but how do I change the name of Macintosh HD to something else?

Of course, if the machine isn't letting you use the above suggestion, you might be sharing that hard drive out, which prevents naming. Go to your file sharing control panel and click stop.

Afte you change your hard drive name you may have to change the preferences in some applications that associate files from a HD name such as Dreamweaver if you have your site indexed to the former drive, hence the new name. It may be a good idea to rebuild your desktop as well by holding down the command (apple) key and the option key at the same time on startup.

Thanks guys. That's the way I remembered doing it but it wasn't working. But I do have sharing on so that must be why.

Just got 5 new iMacs and wanted to change the names so that it wasn't so confusing having 4 other Macintosh HDs on my desktop .
