Do you not have a hard drive icon on the desktop? I think if your regular files and folders aren't scattered about the desktop, that's because you've got a different desktop file mounting when you boot from the Norton CD. If you don't have a hard drive icon on the desktop, that means your drive's not mounting for some reason.
Does Norton Disk Doctor see the hard drive? If so, did you run Disk Doctor?
In lieu of Disk Warrior, it's probably your best bet, unless it's a mechanical problem with the drive.
Hopefully, if it's "just" corrupt directories, things should be restoreable, and you'll get back to normal.
