Dramatic System Slowdown

Why is my Mac running like it's full of sludge ? 2 hours to empty the Trash !!!! I upgraded to OS 8.5.1 today , from OS 7.6.1 , clean install, on my Performa 6300. I used Conflict Catcher 8.0.6 to do a System Merge for all the non-Apple system folder stuff.
My Trash, any File Copy, and a lot of common Finder functions are incredibly s-l-o-w. Even the clock quits running. I unplugged the SCSI...shut off Virtual Memory...never turned on "Calculate Folder Sizes" ... but it's still S-L-O-W-E-R than Minnesota molasses.
Help !
( I vaguely recall reading a post about this topic recently...something involving Conflict Catcher's System Merge...maybe turn off Merge System Resources.) I'm frustrated big time...

Try changing your battery. I know it sounds too simple, but your symptoms suggest a battery going dead. Even if it doesn’t work, it’s a benign fix and can’t hurt anything anyway.

if there is still a problem-
in the clone world of 3rd party disk drivers this can happen if major os upgrades are done without updating the HD drivers.
When you installed the os did it report it couldn't upgrade the HD drivers?
Or perhaps you put a checkmark in the "options" section to not update them?
just a thought.

I wish that was the case for my new system 8.5 running so poorly/slowly...but my onboard Hard Disk is Apple-branded and the Installer updated the driver just fine. (My outboard drive is running on Hard Disk ToolKit 3.0.2 , but that shouldn't matter since the system folder isn't there ). I'm halfway thru an exhaustive Conflict Catcher test...so far it looks like Apple Menu Options and the Appearance Control Panel / application may be part of the problem. I'm about to do a fresh install and go back to square one. Thanks for your input.

FOLLOWUP : I solved some of my system slowdown problem. This may be of use in other situations, too. I came across an obscure reference at Complete Conflict Compendium that said to not leave an Alias to your Hard Drive in Apple Menu Items when going to a new system.
Removing that alias really helped ! Then I trashed the Finder Preferences and Apple Menu Option Prefs and proceeded on. While still not running like a Thoroughbred, my new system 8.5.1 on the old Mac Performa 6300 is delivering some of the promises. Still some buggy Extensions or old 7.6 system carryovers to work thru, though

wow, glad you posted that... an old alias to the 'old' HD (or so to speak) would slow things down for sure
and let me take this opportunity to advise users with older/slower Macs to NOT alias your HD to the Apple Menu because it will slow your Mac down! even if that alias is new and clean, it will slow you down...
