I just got a 8500/180, and there is a BIG problem!
Normally my screen is set to thousands of colors
or millions of colors, but when i turn down the monitor
to 256 colors my screen splits into two screens of the
same picture, jumbles up the picture,
and my mouse appears as a one inch wide red vertical line
from the top to the bottom of my screen!
Does anyone know about this problem and how to fix it?

BTW this happens both on a new Viewsonic monitor, and
an old Apple monitor

Thanks in advance!

You need a part from Griffic Technologies- I have one on my desk as I write this. The 8500 is screwy with multi-scan monitors, so I used this piece before getting a new video card. The device is called the MacSync adapter, and once installed all resolutions work like a charm. You can find the adapter at http://www.griffintechnology.com/macsync.html
Good Luck!

how much VRAM? which apple monitor? screen size/resolution?
you need adapter to use a VGA multi-synch like kocher said, but not for an apple monitor. however the apple monitor may not be multisynch. i have a Hi-Res 14" Apple on the stock video out on my 8500, no adapter, 640x480 at millions and a VGA Compaq on my video card out,a Rage128 Orion
apple monitor only runs at 640x480 for me but have from 640x480 to 1280x1024 on VGA
the anomalies you describe may be bad VRAM or connection...reseat the sticks you have...fill the slots if they are'nt..1Mb stix, 4Mb max total
