I just got a PPC 9500/200 and I wanna install an additional internal hard drive; I didn't get the manual so I have to figure out how to open the case( not easy I hear), any info on that would be appreciated.;
Also, what are my options as far as getting a G3 ugrade card; I am thinking about the Sonnet cards but would appreciate any suggestions/recommendations.
And one more thing:
Would a 64MB EDO DIMM(168 pin, 5V, 2K, 60ns) for a Powermac 6500 work on a Powermac 9500/200.
Thanks again.

There are several thumbnail screws located at the rear of the 9500 case. unscrew these and slide the outter case back a couple of inches and then lift up. Just play with it and use soft (but firm!) hands.

As for upgrades... there are to many to list I think. I've never bought a G3 upgrade so I can't really help you there.

The 64MB EDO memory won't work in your new 9500. You'll need 168pin Fast Page memory (~$100 for 64MB)

I don't know if the 64mb EDO Dimm will work, I think it may have to be 4k instead of 2k, but if you want to sell the 64mb Dimm, how much would you want for it? I'm interested in buying it if it is a good Dimm Module. You can e-mail me at RSchnarren@aol.com with your answer.

I have an 8500 and it is essentially the same "take apart" as the 9500. 8500 has 4 screws, I think the 9500 has 6.
The Wolfe has your case cracked, once inside, to get at the processor card, squeeze the sides of the fan bracket and drop it down(hinges at bottom). This gives you access to the processor card and your PCI slots.
To install RAM or VRAM you will have to unplug EVERTHING from your MoBo. Processor card, PCI cards, internal AND external cables. Remove the single screw in the center of the MoBo(right side of machine), remove the power switch extender, slide the MoBo forward about 1/4", lift a lock tab and gently remove it. 5v EDO DIMMs are the best, make sure and install in matched pairs into A1-B1, A2-B2 etc to get 10-20% boost from interleaving. It gets easier after you do it a few times.

PM8500/120 (G3-400 @ 454 MHz, 1MB L2 @ 227) OS 9.0.4
240 MB interleaved EDO RAM @ 56.8MHz 4MB onboard VRAM to 14" Apple monitor
ATi Rage Orion to 17" Compaq V70 VGA monitor
4X CD-ROM replaced with 12/20X variable speed Plextor CD-ROM
2GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm AV HD (Engineering prototype)
1GB IBM HD (stock)
Internal Zip (replaced floppy)
Several extra fans

Can I mix EDO and FPM dimms.

Would a hard drive mounting sled for a 6400/6500 work in a 9500?

I believe the sleds are generic... you can mix EDO and FPM, but it isn't a good idea... make sure of the return policy before you buy the RAM so you have recourse. With an 85/9500, make SURE everything is seated before re-assembling... I have only had bad RAM in my 8500 once, and the only symptom was screwes up ethernet and serial ports...no printing or internet.

You might want to look up the Apple TIL on EDO RAM. <http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n19456>. This will give you the skinny on which Macs support EDO and which do not. In fact, it even seems to say that FPM and EDO RAM can be mixed and matched in the 9500 with no problems. Check it out, should be helpful.
