Hi all

Has anyone had any experience with putting a PCI USB/FW card in a 5500/250?

Does it work? Anything to watch out for?

all comments appreciated.

Cheers

I put a McAlly USB/FW Card in my 6360, and although it's not supported (non-compliant PCI slot), it works great. I believe they share the same architecture. The only thing I needed to do was upgrade to 9.1 (was 9.0 and it didn't work) no drivers needed. The only problem with this solution is I can't find any reference to the fact that McAlly makes a combo card any more- it's not listed on their website under current or discontinued products. I got it open-box at Microcenter and they didn't have any others. The model number is not on the box, and I'm not taking my computer apart to find it, but it has two USB and 3 FW ports (2 ext, 1 int). Perhaps you can find one online somewhere.

Otherwise, I'd buy one local so I could return it if it doesn't work.

Well I did some looking and I found the card- it was on MaCally's site- under the USB section, not FW where I was looking (originally tried to find it when I was looking for drivers to make it work under 9).

Actually- it's not at MacAlly's main site- it only seems to be at their online store. You can find it here:

Hope this helps.

As far as I know, any card that uses a OHCI compliant chip set will work.
I got a generic combo board from comp-usa (with their brand name on it) and it works fine in my 8500. It said windows only on the box too.
