I'm a bit underwhelmed by the zip of the Rage 128, so I was wondering how much of a performance increase I'd see by upgrading the graphics card. Is it really worth it since it's on a PCI bus? How much of a speed increase should I expect to see? Which card would be the best to upgrade to? Thanks.

It depends on what OS you're running. If it's Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar then you should definitely get a Radeon 7000 PCI. If you're running OS 9 or OS 8, you will barely feel the improvement in 2D however it will be significant in 3D

An original Radeon is a better card than the 7000, IMO. The 7000 is slower, but has the advantage of being dual head for 2 monitors.

You'll defintely see quite an improvement in 3D. I stuck an original Radeon in a B&W (Mac OS 9) I had and got a definite improvement in the FPS in UT.

Are you running OS 9 or OS X and what apps or games are you using. What do you wantto speed up... 2D or 3D graphics?

Interesting... could you tell me which of the Radeon PCI's would be suitable - can PC ones be flashed?

If you're using OS 9 and only one monitor, don't rule out the 3DFX Voodoo cards. I had a Voodoo 5500 PCI in my B&W and it was the best card for gaming I ever used. When I went to OS X I had to ditch it in favor of the PCI Radeon. But games really flew with the Voodoo!

I'd like to be able to just *play* Warcraft III. It's impossible to do with a Rage 128. Also, speed boosts in the OS itself would be nice.

I'm running 10.2.3.

Then you should go for either the Radeon 7000 MAC Edition or like somebody mentioned the original Radeon MAC Edition. Just be careful to get a MAC Edition because the PC Edition won't work and unlike the Radeon 8500 AGP can not be flashed.

Holy...I just looked up the prices online for the 7000...$100! For a fairly low-end card, that's pretty damn expensive. I checked on Price Watch...anyone know if someone is selling this card for a more reasonable price? Not shelling out $100...

Umm, even in OS X 10.2 there will still only be a noticeable difference in 3D. Remember that Quartz Extreme requires an AGP graphics card (amongst other requirements) to do its magic. (Even if you use a hack to activate QE on a PCI Radeon, the PCI bus speed will negate any speed improvements QE could have brought.)

Yeah I know that but I've also heard that the Radeon 7000 does make a significant difference even if QE is not enabled, simply by being faster.
And I've seen it myself, G3 Beige w/ stock ATI Rage128 which we then replaced with an ATI Radeon 7000 and it was a noticable difference.

Well i went from the stock Rage 128 to a Radeon Mac Edition on my B&W 450mhz. i test it on osx (have ditched os9 long ago) in RTCW with the rage it would barely run..and i mean barely..popped in the Radeon and WHAM!! what a difference!! i could now run RTCW at 800x600 32bit, and everything set on medium or high...it runs pretty good...i mean its no g4 with agp but for a 4 year old machine its not bad. wcc III also runs good, 1024x768 32bit all turned high. and no luck flashing PC PCI card over to the mac..to my knowledge it hasnt been done. it wuld be cool sense there is a PCI Nvidia Geforce 4200 MX 64mb DDR...it would be nice to stick in my B&W!!! its only like $100! dude if your looking for a Radeon Mac Edition PCI..be prepared to pay!! i've seen them on ebay for $150+, dont get the 7000 its like a neutered version of the Original Radeon..the 7000 is missing the Charisma Engine (hardware TCL) and although it has a lower clock speed than the 7000 the OG Radeon can be overclocked..so point of the story is: Get the Original Radeon Mac Edition...or.....buy and AGP PowerMac G4
