I've had an iMac 600 CD-RW for nearly two years and it's never had a problem. Today, two dead pixels suddenly appeared in the lower right part of the screen.

Is this something to be worried about? What could be causing this?

I've heard of dead pixels in new machines, but I've never heard of dead pixels appearing later in the life of a machine.

Mmmm, as in an old-style, CRT iMac?

Dead pixels on LCDs are a fact of life, either straight out of the box or over the lifetime of the screen. Display problems with the iMac aren't that unusual, though I can't say I've heard of too many dead pixels on CRTs -- usually it's colour issues or warping. The eMac seems to have similar problems.

If you have Apple Care, may be worth having your machine checked out.

..that's a rather worrying thought

( over the lifetime of the screen )

..so in other words , they can appear at a later date ?

The iMac 600 is the good ol' CRT iMac which means that it cannot have dead pixels. Only LCD displays can have something like a stuck pixel because... well, a 15" LCD has 1024x768 pixels whereas a CRT has a Ray Tube (That's why it's callec Cathode Ray Tube = CRT).

So whatever that is, it's not a dead pixel.
