I wanted to post that I can NOT see trading my DP 800 G4 for the latest offering only to find that I'm not alone here. And I was so ready to shell out a ton of money for a new super G4. Wonder if market rejection of the new G4 line will have enough effect to sell Apple's stock short.... Never the less, I still want to upgrade my 1x Superdrive with an Apple sanctioned newer 4x model (to work with iDVD). Anybody know if an Apple store will add to or upgrade my current G4 with their new Superdrive?

1x? Dude if you're getting 1x something is wrong.

I have 2x800 g4 here too but I get 2x. and I have an older clunkier 103 superdrive
In a realm beyond site, the sky shines gold, not blue, there the Triforce's might makes mortal dreams come true.

He probably just hit the wrong key.

You can get the 4x aftermarket. Just do a search on the net for the best prices.

Seems that I have the same system as yours. But all my reading says that the 103 can only do 1x and that a firmware upgrade only permits the use of higher speed blanks while writing is still restricted to 1x. If you're getting 2x writing speeds with your 103, that's very cool. I haven't tried using 2x blanks so I can't comment further.

I know about the 4x aftermarket (i.e. Pioneer A105 etc?), but hear say that Apple "wired" their iDVD only to work with their sanctioned installed Superdrives. I know that I can use my DVD Studio Pro with a 4x Pioneer A105 but for most of my video work needs, the iDVD is just so much easier to use.

yeah, DVR-A03/103's could always write at 2x. have one in my 450 sawtooth, and burns at 2x on 2x media. 1x on cheap media. 1x on DVD-RW

Excellent information, the kind that's giving me a.....(never mind). More reason for me NOT wanting to upgrade to the new G4. All this time I thought only the A04/104's could write at 2x.

I still don't understand why Apple makes the statement: "firmware update enables the SuperDrive to read from and write to high-speed media, but it does NOT increase the drive's speed; the updated 2x SuperDrive writes to high-speed media at 1x" .... Copied from AppleCare Knowledge Base URL

it does allow the superdrive to write to high-speed media, high speed meaning the new 4x media, not 2x media. apparently, the 2x superdrives can overheat when writing to the new 4x media. the firmware fixes that.
