I'm interested in purchasing an external DVD Burner for use with my Cube and PowerBook. I'm interested in suggestions on what will give me the most bang for my buck.

Best overall quality manufacturer?

Any manufacturers that you would stay away from? (Why?)

Thanks for the insight and input!

I would suggest the multiformat (DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R/DVD+RW) drive of Sony in a Firewire enclosure. You will never be wrong wichever format you want. I don't know the drive number though, but look on Sony's website and you will find it.

Check to make sure that it will work as a DVD+RW/+R drive. I read somewhere that a buyer was having this problem. I would suggest that you purchase either a LaCie DVD-RW or OWC DVD-RW which use the Pioneer 105 mechanism.
I made the mistake of buying a Ricoh MP5125A (rebadged Ikebana) and have yet to successfully copy a DVD recorded on a Philips 985 DVD standalone recorder.

I've always had good luck with stuff from MCE. If for no other reason than for comparison take a look at the MCE Lucid SuperDrive Portable FireWire DVD-R/RW Drive

They're not the cheapest solution usually, but their stuff is all designed to be Mac-compatible. And the people there are willing to do whatever it takes to satisfy their customers. Good people.
