My friend had me come in to figure out the problem with an employee's computer. It's veeery slow to start up - to the tune of 15 minutes. It's a G3 Imac, 450 mhz running on Mac Classic. Plenty of memory - 320 MB.
I already ran Disk Doctor (which took 3 hours, literally) which couldn't find anything but minor problems. I ran speed disk. I rebuilt the desktop. I looked through the applications in the system profiler and deleted duplicates. I ran a hardware diagnostic.
Now the start up is 5 minutes as opposed to 15, but I'm still trying to figure out what could be going on.
I did a search but I couldn't figure it out. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Emile

try deleting everything in the Macintosh HD->System Folder->Apple Menu Items->Recent Servers folder. and everything in theMacintosh HD->System Folder->Servers folder. That usually helps speed up start times.

Also make sure there is a startup disk selected in the startup disk control panel. If there isn't, the Mac will take time to look for something to boot from.

Thanks to you and the first poster for the advice. I've isolated the problem to a system extension conflict. :-( So I'll have to sit down and isolate which one is causing the problem. It's tedious - like figuring out what foods set off an allergy. ;-P

Some advice for this, if you're interested.
Turn off half of your extensions and reboot. If there is still a problem, turn off half of the remaining extensions, etc., etc. That way is much quicker than one at a time method.
