I can't decide on weather to purchase the $999 emac (new) or the the recently discontinued (refurbished) iMac 15" combo. After the added memory and the stand for the emac the prices are roughly the same.
I am concerned about the ongoing display problems with the eMac and am not really sure how well the LCD on the iMac would hold up around the kids.
Any advice ?

I have an eMac at work. I had the same dilemma when I was buying it and I went for the eMac because of the bigger sreen (17" vs. 15" on the iMac) + built-in speakers (I don't think they come standard on the combo iMac). So far the eMac has been great. Keep in mind that it's a little bulky and very heavy, though.
From what I've seen, the display on the iMac is tough enough, so it shouldn't be a problem around your kids. If you want a small and compact unit, definitely go w. the iMac.

According to the Macfixit website, Apple has finally nailed down the raster problem with the eMac. Quoting Macfixit:
"Resolving the eMac "raster shift" issue involves the fairly straightforward replacement of a single component - the IVAD cable."
I would imagine that new eMacs won't have that problem.

the 15" LCD and 17" CRT are about the same viewable size.
I would still recommend the iMac over the eMac.

Thanks for all the help guys. I pulled the trigger on the iMac today. Here's hoping she really likes it, I know I will...
