OK, MacMall is offering the 1GHz 17" iMac with a free 512mb of RAM free (of course they charge for installation). They say this is over a $300 value. I have called and asked if they can replace the internal memory to a 512 mb chip and they say yes and it will only cost $140 with installation costs. Is this possible? If a free 512 is worth over $300, how can the internal one be worth around $100?!?!
Also, has anyone ordered from MacMall? How did it go? I have heard of ways to get free shipping (not overnight) has anyone gotten that?

Thanks for the help, I am trying to get my wife to go along with a new purchase!!

The user-accessible slot is a smaller so-dimm slot, and those types of memory usually cost a little bit more than the regular dimms that are in the "non user-accessible slot". For a frame of reference, 512 ddr dimm costs $100, 512 ddr sodimm costs $170 at Crucial. I'd say that MacMall's estimate for the 512 sodimm "value" is just a bit high.

Thanks for the info, but I called again, and now they say they WON'T give the free 512MB RAM if I get the internal one switched. They say it is an Apple made order and their deal doesn't apply to those, I don't see why not. I have emailed them with my dilema hoping to get a response, will keep people posted!
