I have a G4 466mhz and i was thinking of upgrading my graphics card from the stock Ati RagePro. Would a Radeon 8500 be a reasonable uprade? Would a notice significant performance in X and in games?

I got the same machine, I put in a 9000 Pro, because I needed the ADC connection, made Big difference, then I put in a Dual 800 MGz "powerlogix", made a big difference, then I installed a WD 80gig 8meg cache Drive, and man the computer flies.

I put in a superdrive (pioneer 105) and it works right out of the box.

Heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new computer, and good for awhile for me.

Cool. I was looking into the upgrades myself but I found them to be way more money than I have to spend.
As far as graphics cards are concerned, which would you recomend? They are all kinda of expensive for macs
I read through the flashing pc radeon8500 thread but found it confusing and determined there was some risk involved.
Anyway, you don't think a radeon 8500 would be overdoing it?

My machine's current specs.
G4 400. 1.25GB ram. 80GB + 60GB HD. DVD. Radeon 8500. Radeon 7000. ATA100 PCI card.

So by my actions, I'd say it's a worthwhile, and non overkill upgrade.
I do recommend the radeon 8500, it's a good card. For me, it was worth the $150 I spent on it. Your only other choices for a faster card is the GF4 Ti or the radeon 9700, and I would not get either without an accompanying processor upgrade.
After you get the video card, my next goal would be a processor upgrade.

This should be an incredible upgrade! Are you sure you have a RagePro in that G4 and not a Rage128? Even if it's a rage128 (which I think is what came stock with even the earliest g4's) you'll notice an incredible difference if you're running OS X or games.
