I went by the Apple Store in South Coast Plaza today (2.5.03). I bought the 1ghz iMac, an Airport Extreme base station and card, and the Office for X promo version. They didn't have the 200 dollar base station so I got the higher end model.

I got the computer for my secretary at the office. I took it in and set it up. I still have to find a 512mb memory card to bring the total to 768. My impressions are that the screen is stunning and the machine is faster than my 667 DVI Titanium that has 1 gig of ram.

I don't like the keyboard, but that's just because I'm used to typing on a laptop and the longer travel increases my error rate. I'll have more software (Photoshop, InDesign) on the computer tomorrow. I'm glad I waited. I got the Clearance to get this thing almost a month ago. It really took a bunch of patience to hold it out.

I did pay the sales tax because I wasn't willing to wait out the shipping. But then, someone else is paying for the machine (and someone else gets to use it).

Thanks for your impressions! I would really like to hear what you think of performance in Photoshop and InDesign, as I also have a PowerBook 667 and I have been working on that because I find my Cube a bit pokey. The specs on the new iMac have me seriously considering it for a new desktop.

I'll continue to post whatever useful information I can. The one hitch is that it will be tainted by the fact that I only have 256mb of ram on board until I get the larger chip.

So is the volume the same as the old iMac's?

Did they make any other small changes?

I'm not sure what you mean by "volume". If you mean the size, it's the same. I'm rather impressed by the speed of the iMac. It still only has the 256mb and it just goes. I installed the InDesign 2.0 and put it through it's paces with good results. My level of satisfaction is easily 9+. This is an excellent upgrade, especially considering the 200 dollar price drop. After I upgrade the memory, I'll probably slip some game into it and see what it feels like. I have the usual suspects, RTCW, MOH, etc.

A-yeah, my bad. All I can say is that with the stock speakers hooked up and cranked to within 3 bars of the top volume, they were quite loud. But then that was in my office, not somewhere you'd actually want them to blow you away. For that, I would go with an amplifier.
