IT HAS VIDEO OUT!

Video out support
Need to connect to an external VGA display, projector or TV? That?s easy. Both iMac models feature mini-VGA output ports that work with an optional Apple VGA display adapter, and both support video mirroring. You can mirror your projects to an external display or projector ? perfect for presentations and for sharing your ideas. Additionally, the 17-inch iMac comes with support for S-Video and composite video signals, so you can display your multimedia projects on a big-screen TV: simply connect your TV to the video output port via the optional Apple Video Adapter, and you?re on television.

Further thought; this may be a redundant post, but still!

Lame. If it could support TWO monitors, that'd be something, but video mirroring is stupid.

I've heard the iBook firmware hacks work on the iMacs and so...it would.

I think the hack has only been reported to work on the old 17" iMac (and whatever iBooks). I wouldn't just assume it works on the new 17" 1 GHz.

I was thinking about getting a 17" PB, but if the hack works on the 17" 1GHz I'll probably get the iMac and just keep my 667 DVI for the road.

Ya know, now that I think of it, here's to bet that those 'dead' ibooks and imacs from the firmware hack can be brought back to life by killing the bios and resetting it

(this can be done by leaving it sit without bios battery for a few days ,or cuda reset)

Firts of all, Macs don't have a BIOS. We have OpenFirmware. BIOS is yuck and sounds crap. OF is cool.

Second of all, the new 17" iMac has a GF4MX running on 4xAGP with 64DDR. This same chip has been used on PowerMac graphic cards that support mirroring/spanning. So why shouldn't a firmware hack work? Maybe not the same one that worked on the old iMac, but a modified version?

Have these iBooks been dead? I thought that a simple Open Firmware NVRAM and All reset resolves this issue. It has for the couple that have come across our doorstep.

Could it be that he was referring to Composite and S-Video? As far as I know the flat panel iMacs always had a MiniVGA port for VGA out, but now you get a MiniVGA port which allows S-Video and Composite through an adapter - I'm really not sure, maybe it was that way since day 1, but I thought it was new...

S-video/composite IS new.

before it only worked with vga.

I'm rather sure this is an openfirmware hackable thing.
