I have a SP 733mhz G4, 1.2gigs of RAM. I usually sell my Macs after 2 years as that usually provids a reasonable ROI. I would benefit greatly by moving my home music composing needs from hardware based samplers, audio board, etc., to OS x Cubase (which I already own) and next month to a software-based sampler system (Steinberg HALion).

I really can't wait 6-12 months for the 970 Mac, plus I would get more for my 733 now.

Will I see a major improvement in performance using resource-taxing audio mixing/sampling software with the new 1.4ghz DP Mac vs. my current set-up? If so, I could maybe rationalize that the 1.4ghz G4 would be very useable for the next 2 years when the new 970's have had a rev or two. I'm also guessing that the new 970's might launch initially with super-premium prices?

Okay, let me put it another way. Would I see a significant difference if I went with the DP 1.4ghz G4 over my SP 733mhz, or would it not be significant. If the difference is minimal, I might as well stick it out for 6-12 months.

You'd see a HUGE difference.

That DP will be waiting for you instead of you waiting for the SP.

I can still hardly use up my g4 2x800's resources and I can be very demanding of my computer at times. See www.talesmud.com if you need a quick illustration of this.
In a realm beyond site, the sky shines gold, not blue, there the Triforce's might makes mortal dreams come true.

Thanks Mac Zealot.

Most opinions on these boards seem to be that even the newest 1.4ghz Macs are not up to pro specs. I just wanted to make sure the new Mac was at least a major improvement over my current SP 733 system.

Most people that talk about new Apple hardware don't have it. They have some crappy 400-500 MHZ G4 and say that it is as good as the newer stuff. Stupid. The new towers are very fast.
Yes, I know I could buy a PC, but why?
