My friend just got a Dual 867 with a Combo drive and it seems to have a problem with CDs and DVDs that are slightly damaged. Instead of reporting an error when the bad sectors are accessed, they hang the system and sometimes eventually cause a hard crash with a kernel error. The traceback goes to the drive access routines.

It doesn't happen all of the time, so I'm wondering if the drive is defective or if there is possibly some firmware problem with these models. Has anyone else had anything similar happen to them? Since the problem tends to be transient, I worry about how to describe it to Apple and get it fixed properly if it is just a defective drive.

It seems to happen on all of the MacAddict CD's.

Any thoughts?
