Hi, I'm a stranger in this forum as I have an iBook 500. At full throttle, it rips a CD to MP3 in iTunes at around 3.5x, so around 20 mins. How long does it take on the latest Power Macs? Is the bottle-neck how fast it can read stuff off the CD rather than how fast it can encode to MP3?
Just curious really.

What bit rate? Lower (ie 128) takes longer than higher (ie 256).

On a stock G4/400, I used to get around 5 to 6x going to 192. iTunes is G4 and MP enhanced.

hello, i encode all my mp3's at 192Kbps, normal stereo mode, and on my DP1ghz it will rip them at around 20 - 21X. it takes a track or two to get warmed up, but it is a fast process. hope this helps

Thanks for the numbers, duboy, I was curious myself. The main limitations have been processors, my old 180MHz Power Computing clone encoded at just over 1x! But with a G4, it's a pretty speedy process as duboy's numbers show.

I have a dual 1 GHz with super drive, and I get between 15 and 23x encoding at 256KBps, full stereo.

The dualies are really good at ripping and burning because of the way the threads can be passed from processor to processor. Ahh, power...
