This may be a no-brainer, but I wanted to see what you guys would do. My friend just picked up a dual 1 Ghz G4 tower last weekend. He already has a tangerine iMac and a 500 Mhz G4 tower with 832 mb or RAM. Since he doesn't need 2 towers, he offering to trade his old G4 tower to me for my 2001 500 mHz iBook.

I'm having a hard time adopting OS X (even though I still use it 99%) with my G3 iBook. The iBook has 384 mb of RAM but is still very sluggish (I should have sand all over my desk as much as I've seen the beach ball). I'm a graphic designer and I use all the major Adobe products and while it's nice to have the portability of a laptop, I think I could benefit much more from the speed of a G4 tower.

What would you guys do? Swap? Sell iBook on eBay for $600-700 and buy a new G4 1Ghz? Money is a little tight for me right now, and I'd hate to have to finance a new machine. My friend would throw in an old junk monitor for nothing.

I agree, a 500mhz G4 with 832 mb RAM is going to be way faster in OSX than your iBook 500. If you don't need the mobility, go for it.

I'd say take advantage of your friend's stupidity

Unless you REALLY like the iBook or need portability or something then get the G4. If you bought it for portability and still want portability keep it. If you wanna run OS X faster the G4 will be faster it'ss graphcis card will use QE, you can upgrade that too if you wanna, you can also upgrade the processor after market. YOu can upgrade RAM. Basically if you wanna toss more money into the machine you can and have a pretty sweet progressive system!
