Yesterday, I was installing new memory, a temporary hard drive, and a new dvd-rom. Case was open, everything was running fine.

I should've left it open overnight and gone to sleep, but I figured, wth, I might as well close this up.

I try closing it, the ribbon cable and bundled cable were giving me a little trouble but it closed OK.

Thus, began the flood of bizarre problems.

First, the mouse doesn't work. At first I couldn't figure out what was happening. I pop open the case, the cable to the right of where you plug in all the IDE devices was loose. I plug that back in.

OK...so to get the mouse to work, I eventually discover that by plugging in the mouse directly to the USB port on the back of the G3 instead of the Cinema Display, it works again. But now it's as if the USB on the Cinema Display isn't functioning.

I shrug this off for the night and proceed to look up some email and stuff with a browser. I download some stuff from versiontracker,
and try to unstuff it, but I get continuous errors from Stuffit saving that the .sit files might be corrupted.

Stuffit unexpectedly quits; all the browsers that I try suddenly start doing the same thing. Eventually, the gray screen of death appears telling me to re-start the computer.

So my question is...what the !@#$%%^ happened? Everything was fine until I tried closing the case...but then upon examination, nothing's lose or accidentally broken off.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that when I get home, everything will mysteriously be all good and well.
Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

Are you sure your RAM is OK? I installed some ram, and it shows up fine and worked for about 5 minutes, then all kinds of bizarre lock-ups and freezes would happen.
After replacing it with the right kind, all was well.

Has anybody else out there encountered problems with the ATI Radeon 7000 card?

When I installed the wrong set extensions from the enclosed cd-rom that came with the ATI Radeon 7000 for mac set, the extensions pretty much crippled the entire computer, such that the Grey Screen of Death would kept popping up and telling me to restart after every single boot-up.

There was no good solution in sight so I ended up completely nuking my hard drive and re-installing 10.2.3.

A look at today's console log suggests that even with the newer "correct" extensions along with the firmware upgrade that came out, the same problems might still persist.

are you sure the ribbon-cable for your HD is still ok? If it's not connecting on all 40 or 80 pins, then you'll be passing incomplete or corrupted data back and forth.

The problem turned out to be the memory.

I talked to some of the OWC tech support guys and there have been complaints of the cheaper $30 256 MB dimms not working with the blue and white. These cases constitute a small handful of b&w owners, not enough to warrant pulling the item off the website though.
