Has anybody else out there encountered problems with the ATI Radeon 7000 card?

When I installed the wrong set extensions from the enclosed cd-rom that came with the ATI Radeon 7000 for mac set, the extensions pretty much crippled the entire computer, such that the Grey Screen of Death would kept popping up and telling me to restart after every single boot-up.

There was no good solution in sight so I ended up completely nuking my hard drive and re-installing 10.2.3.

A look at the console log suggests that even with the newer "correct" extensions along with the firmware upgrade that came out, the same problems might still persist.

I've been having all sorts of troubles with the card. I never used to experience kernel panics until a few months ago, and I was able to narrow it down to the Radeon 7000. What's more, Maya 4.5 is completely unusable with the 7000 installed. After a few minutes it invariably causes a kernel panic, and invariably causes one when trying to quit.

To ATI's credit, they have been fairly quick with updates, but they've yet to nail down the problem appropriately, and Alias/Wavefront refuses to do anything.
There is no emoticon for what I am feeling!

My system specs:

2 furry caches
17" diaganol quad pumped weener
198 lb ham
44x36x57 CWR
overpriced, underperforming, but sleek nonetheless.

I also have a G4.

^ Thanks. Hey, is the kernel panic what I refer to as "the Grey Screen of Death?"

I have noticed some really bizarre things.

- when I first installed the ATI card with the extension on the cd-rom, the computer just kept dying upon reaching the desktop. that grey screen would appear immediately after startup

- immediately after, I re-install 10.2.3 to clear the bad extensions, and install the newer extensions + firmware update, and everything seemed gravy.

- on Monday, I install a new dvd-rom, memory, and a hard drive from a friend that we know works fine. at first nothing bad happened, but then the grey screen restarts started showing up again.

This is where it gets really strange. I notice to you, as I've been playing around with it on suggestion of a macnn reader, that if I put in my original two 128 MB dimms, everything functions fine. I drop any one of the 3 256 MB dimms from OWC, and the grey screen bombs start again.

ERRrrr...OWC is not a company with a bad track record, it can't be possible that all three DIMMS are bad, right? It has something more to do with the ATI card and possibly how it is reacting to the new memory perhaps? I haven't the slightest clue.

I think another test I'll try is removing this bringing back my CRT monitor, pulling out the ATI card, and inserting all the memory then and see what happens. I sure hope ATI has weekend customer service.

The gray screen happens to me on OS 9.2.1?? Stange. then I restared again in os 10.2.3 and it worked fine. For me it happens at restart and having the TV also connected to the card?
I donīt know if that can help you?

^ How do you get that in 9.2.1? Doesn't 9.2.1 just show the sad mac bomb?

I'm pretty sure the ATI card is at the root of my problems, I will try to confirm this tomorrow night. Time to hit the sack...

what does it say when booting in verbose mode?

(command-v, or option-v at startup in OS X, I can't remember which)

^ I finally narrowed down the problem. It was the cheap memory causing problems (even though OWC says it is for the B&W G3, they say in some rare cases, like mine, the memory won't work).

Sorry it was 9.2.2. But Iīm quite sure I started up with 9.2.1 as I have only this CD for instalation, and then did the update.
