So, I asked a while back if there was some limit for OS X using hard drives larger than 120 GB... people said no, but I bought a 180 GB Western Digital drive and Disk Utility wouldn't allow more than 127Gb to be used on it. So, I buy a Sonnet Tempo ATA/133 PCI card - after some hassle getting OS 9 installed to update the firmware to use a big drive (it didn't just work as Sonnet claimed) I installed OS X (using the built-in ATA controller) then it works fine, but when I try to boot into the working, installed system using the sonnet controller, I get stuck after open firmware, and the drive will not boot.
ANYWAYS>>> the point of the story is... now that I am going back to use the built-in controller (I think it is ATA/33 on a quicksilver) it recognizes all 160GB of useable space, and I have used the space, so i know it is not a fluke. So what is the deal? I guess I am going to return the card since it looks like I didn't need it in the first place - but I am worried that the drive will go all screwy and I will be stuck.
Does anyone know what is going on? Why can I all of a sudden see/use the drive's full capacity when originally I thought (and read/was told) that I couldn't?

You can't just take a drive from the internal ATA and put it on a PCI IDE controller and have it work (or vice versa). The drive has to be reformatted.

As for why your computer initially saw the drive as 127GB and later saw the rest... that's weird, I dunno.

In any case, your Quicksilver has ATA66 with 48-bit LBA to allow access to >127GB drives.

Mac OS X can see large drives as long as the hardware is capable.
