I have an older iMac DV 400 MHz G3 that is dead. When I push the power button, the light on the front turns green and I hear the startup chime but that's it. I don't think the hard drive or CD drive spins up because the same thing happens if whether or not they are connected. Also, the screen stays black, never turns grey or anything else. I've tried resetting the PRAM, firmware, booting from a CD, booting from my iPod, nothing works. It's very strange.
I've also removed the hard drive, reformatted it in a different computer, reinstalled OS X, then reinstalled the drive but the problem still exists.
Any ideas?
-Sam

Try unplugging it? Sounds stupid but i got GLOD, restarted, screen black as you said. So I just unplugged it, restarted it and it started up just fine. Honest

Have you tried pressing the CUDA reset button on the motherboard? I've revived a computer by doing that before. It's near the RAM slots.

I would try these:
-Reset PRAM. Hold down <Command><Option><P><R> during startup before "Welcome to Macintosh"
appears.
-Boot off the system CD that came with the unit. does that work? if not...
-Reset the PMU chip on the logic board with the AC power cord disconnected.
-Try replacing the battery.
-Make sure that the CRT video board cables and the RGB cable are securely attached.
-Make sure there are no bent CRT neck pins.
-Replace the power/analog/video board.
-Replace the logic board.

I had an imac 400 dv, 64 mb original ram plus 256 mb ram that was added later and ran fine for several months.
Long story short, 'puter wouldn't start. fired right up when I pulled the 64mb card out.

You might have some damaged RAM.
Did you recently put in some RAM?
If not, try swapping out the RAM.
