I can't imagine the previous line of
Power Macs could have been any louder.
I liken the sound as a fairly high pitch
industrial whine. It could drive you nuts
if you were obsessive enough. Maybe my
Mac was built early enough before the noise reduction revision. I will say it
seems louder now than two weeks ago. If I
attach a hose to it maybe it could double
as high tech vacuum. Seriously, it's that
loud.

Of course it is loud, Apple didn't change the ventilation at all in the new PowerMacs, why on earth do you think it'll be not as loud as the "old" ones?

Well mainly because Apple said that the new FW800 MDD powerMacs were MUCH quieter than the original MDD PowerMacs.

Now...I just got my FW800 Dual 1.25 and it is VERY quiet. My Athlon PC is much louder. Its about as loud as my PowerBook was with its low speed fan on (not the high speed one).

Is the first poster sure this is a new FW800 MDD Mac? Or is it the old MDD?

Hmmm. . . Have you heard the old MDDs? I was just in the Apple Store at Southdale in Edina, MN, and I could tell the difference between the new and old models even on the salesroom floor. Those new ones are significantly quieter. If you still feel it's as loud as the old MDDs (which I have), talk to Apple.

Well I guess decible level is in the ear
of the beholder. The fan speed does step
down from the initial startup speed. I guess it's just me. I have the box under
my desk so I'm fairly close to it given
the length of stock cabling. By the way
it is the 800fw 1.25 and Apple did say it would be quieter. Not a big deal, but if
there was a way.........

Posted this a couple times already, but Apple is voluntarily offering upgrades for older MDD Power Macs to have quieter power supplies and fans. Link here for details:

Sorry. not eligible. I'm really not that
cranky. I didn't even complain about the stuck pixel on my new cinema display. I was happy to deal with any revisions to the box, but was hoping the display would be a center piece beyond the first upgrade. I just stick a folder over the hole and say 'that's life".
