Just popped into Fry's to check the prices on the Mac Edition 7000's: $129.99!
Went into the PC section, checked out the PC version: $49.99.
This is absolutely ridiculous. The products are almost identical, yet the price is almost TRIPLE the comparable PC card. What gives? Why the hell are us Mac users putting up with such ****? It's unbelievable to me. I'm not buying an ATI product until this price gouging is eliminated.

because they make thousands and thousand more cards for pc then they make for mac, therfor it's cheaper.
As if your mac costs less then a pc?

Idiotic reasoning. Aside from the onboard ROM, there is no difference between the two cards. They use the same manufacturing line for both cards, I guarantee it.

Yes the manufacturing process is probably identical. But, they still have to recoup software/driver/ROM development costs . . . hardware costs aside.

I think this has nothing to do with it. I think ATI assumes (and rightly so) that Mac users will pay more for the same result. It's just sad.

Big_Lou is right.
But it's sad that you assume that ATI is trying to screw us over.

Both are probably at work...
First, Mac users are willing to pay more for their hardware (average PC sold is ~$800 whereas average Mac sold is $1200?).
Second, as someone noted, you have software, driver, and support costs that must be distributed across the base of potential customers. Fry's (and ATI) probably sell 25 or more of the PC version for every Mac card they sell, as there are more PC users, and PC users are generally more likely to upgrade.

I see your point Seamus and I totally agree with you: It's ridiculous and humiliating how ATI tries to screw Mac users over. Sure, there are higher costs for software and drivers, sure they sell much more PC cards than Mac cards. But almost triple the price is just ridiculous, for such an old video card anyhow.
Yet it's true, Mac users are willing to pay more and get less performance, it's been that way for years now and I'm afraid that won't change in our lifetime.

Yah, that really sucks.
But if we pay it, they'll be more than happy to keep selling it at that bloated price.

You should open your own video card company... make cards for pc and mac.. actually JUST MAC. Forget the pc market...
make them good and sell them REALLY cheap.
then, head over sell all of them for really really cheap when you over produce them because you forgot to stop and think that you might be creating a video card for the smallest computer group in the world. It's all about supply and demand. I bet ATI sells 1000x more cards to PC users then mac. and if their price was lower they'd probably sell 800x many, but that gain in mac sales can equally be made up for the money they lost making the card cheaper.

Well... okay, this is the real scoop. But you didn't hear it from me, right? Right.
Steve Jobs is actually a strong supporter for underage slave labour. Never woulda guessed it, eh?
How do I know, you ask? Well! It's obvious! The reason the Mac cards are $80 more than the PC ones are so that only the fortunate few middle-class, and upper/middle class citizens can afford Mac equipment! This conveniently seperates the population monetarily; what is my point? Well, any logical person would drawn links to caste systems that are commonplace in India and whatnot. Because child labour is so rampant there, it's only natural!
Steve Jobs advocates child labour! The bastard...
