Hey all,

Came home from school this weekend to a big problem with my mom's Bluberry 333mhz(i think??) iMac. I installed Jaguar with a Unix file system in the beginning of Decemeber because all she uses it for is the internet and e-mail. It has run fine since then. The problem is, on startup it is fine, until the grey screen with the dark grey Apple comes up. At this point the small circle on the bottom of the screen spins for about a minute and then this command prompt shows up on the top left hand corner that says:

sh-2.05a# Ethernet(BMac): Link up at 100 MBps - Full Duplex

If I then start it with the Ethernet cable not connected it says

sh-2.05a# Ethernet(BMac): Link down

mind you, this is over that grey screen. When this comes up if I hit a key or anything it just goes to a new line with the sh-2.05a# .

We use Comcast High Speed Cable Internet, and have it routed to 3 computers through a Linksys router. The iMac and a Dell PC are hard wired and a third Dell is wireless. I get the same problem if I connect the iMac directly to the internet and bypass the router.

I have no idea what to do or where to go. Anybody have any ideas??

Thanks,
-ChadC

first, why UFS? UFS makes a slow machine slower.

Second, this isn't a hardware problem, this is an OS X problem. My guess is that your install is messed up, and you ought to boot it verbose so you can see all the messages instead of the gray screen.

Command V during boot.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Well, when all esle fails, restart the computer with the install disk and reinstall the OS. It worked, so I am happy. Jus wish I knew what the problem was! O well!

O yea... when I reformatted I installed as Mac OS Extended... thanx for the advice!
