I've been thinking of upgrading mine and I'm not sure how many it will support. Thanks in advance.

Answer: it depends.

Early B&W G3's (Rev A motherboards) had a buggy IDE controller that only allows one drive.

Later ones have a redesigned controller that can take a master and a slave.

Regardless, You can add more IDE drives if you buy an IDE card. Not all will work in the Mac, though. Sonnet cards do, and there are a few others.

In my B&W G3 (rev. 2) I had 3 hard drives and room for one more. I was using a Sonnet Tempo ATA card for ability to run the 3rd and 4th hard drives. Mine was the Tempo ATA/66 which is cheaper but no longer made, still available on eBay.

I have one in my Revision 1. Works great. It's much faster than the built in, so you get a great increase in performance.

Of coarse, like all things, Mac ATA PCI cards are about 3-4 times as much money as PC ones :-(

If you're out of power connectors you can buy a splitter to get an extra connector.

Seems most PC cards are supported under OS X.

ACard, promise, etc.

Offically true, BUT, I have a Rev. 1 with two hard drives on the original controller, a 20G and a 40G. Both work great, no problems. See www.xlr8yourmac.com for more info than you ever wanted on this issue.

Aknowledged that it does work in certain cases...

But looking in other forums I've found that people have had problems with the exact same setup as people who didn't.

My choice was bite the bullet and get a card... not to mention it's much faster now.
