I hope you are all not sick of this question but here we go again...

What product is the best these days to use for watching TV on the iMac?

The cheapest would probably have to be the El Gato EyeTV. It's $199 and streams MPEG-1 video over a USB 1.1 cable.

Great software to go with it, and has some nice features.

But word has it they are releasing a new version in a few months, if you want to wait.

I've heard that the Formac Studio DV/TV is supposedly very good, I'm just waiting for the shop to get some in stock before I pick one up.

The are expensive, ~ £350, but are firewire so will have a lot better quality than the USB solutions.

If all you want to do though is watch live TV and record it for later use, the EyeTV is just fine. Picture quality and sound is just fine on the highest setting. (Use the lower settings to save space).

You can also burn the video to a VCD and play it in most DVD players. Also has a 30-second commercial skip button for recorded shows. It can automatically start recording any show you pick from a constantly updated list of shows in your area. Also, the software is in Cocoa (for those who care) and is updated constantly by El Gato (makes of Toast) and it has a very nice software remote control.
