Would anyone with the new 17" iMac be so friendly to tell how games like Quake 3, Medal Of Honour and other 3D games run?
I am curious if the Geforce 4MX is capable enough to run the latest games.

I am running Warcraft 3 and Return To Castle Wolfenstein at the moment. Warcraft is a little sluggish at 1440x900 due to poor coding which should be rectified in a future patch hopefully. RTCW on the other hand is flawless at 1440x900 and Quake 3 should run even better. All in all very satisfied so far (minus having to scale the resolution on WC3).

I have the older 15" g4 imac which has 384MB ram and a gforce 2 mx video card.
Gaming performance is decent, though it struggles with hard core games.
Return to castle wolfenstein and Medal of honour, and warcraft 3 are all playable (at 800x600x32).
Soldier of fortune 2 chokes a little (which is a shame because its wonderful game).
On your proposed machine, performance should be increased (gforce 4mx). Id expect you could run most 3d titles at 1024x768 with decent frame rates. Dont buy a mac for gaming though - thats what xbox,ps2 and gamecube are for (i have an xbox
 ).

I have a 17" iMac which I bought last week and I was trying to get all my games to run the native resolution (1440x900) and see how they do!

Not if you turn the texture detail from 'Very high' to just 'High'. Somthing about the highest level textures nails graphics cards (even ones more powerful than the GeForce4MX). Especially on the first level, which is known to be a dog to run on slow hardware! Jedi Knight has the same issue with very high textures.

All the 3d games were running full screen at 1440x900 and were pretty well spanking along, only tried about half an hour on each but couldn't see any problems with any of the FPSs I tried (MOA:HH, RTCW, JK2, SOFII, Q3). Go for your life.
We'll see how the hardware handles Halo when it arrives, maybe not fullscreen but certainly at an acceptable resolution I'd wager. The GeForce4MX is a more than capable graphics card for the average gamer, and is a good match for the screen as well.
Plus the widescreen seems to benefit the look of the games somehow, or maybe that's just me!

Well now that sounds a bit more promising. I am not buy my machine for gaming. Yet, I like it to perform admirably if i throw some games at it and I do want them to run @ the native rez. Warcraft, Medal of Honor, and SNES9X is all the gaming i really need on my future 17". God I can't wait till mid-March so I can ditch my iBook and get my 17".

I just have experience with realmyst on my 17"imac 1ghz 768 MB RAM. At native resolution and millions of colours, the game"play" is fluid and the scenes awesome!
