When I woke my computer up from sleep (in OS9.2) the system locked up and I had to restart. After I restarted, I was greeted by the little blinking system folder icon. After booting off a backup HD I found that the main HD was no longer mounting. I tried Norton Systemworks 2.0 and it was as useless as usual. Disk First Aid also didn't work. It just listed the error as:

Checking catalog file
Problem: MountCheck found serious errors
Checking volume bitmap
Problem: Overlapped extent allocation, 4, 25626
Problem: Overlapped extent allocation, 4, etc, etc.

I'm presently letting DiskWarrior chew on the HD to see if it does any good but I'm not holding my breath. Can anyone suggest anything to try? I don't want to reformat the HD if at all possible. Drive is about a year old.

DiskWarrior should be able to fix it. In case it can't, you may get an error code and a suggestion to email it to Alsoft's tech support.

DO THIS!

I received a reply email telling me to download a utility (Nedit, IIRC) and call tech support. A tech talked me through fixing it (!), and I got all of my data back.

I can't speak highly enough about DW and Alsoft.
I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

I'm presently stuck because DiskWarrior won't get past the "Constructing optimized replacement directory..." phase. I was able to update the driver on the drive without error which probably doesn't mean much. I'm getting so frustrated.

Nedit? As in nedit.org? Do you remember what steps you took to fix the problem? I want to have a basic idea before I call tech support.

Indeed. DiskWarrior and Alsoft are superb.
