Hydro workers had to kill the power to my block so that they could safely remove ice from the lines. As usual I was unaware that the power would be down and my Mac suffered a sudden loss of power. The power came on in about 10 minutes and my Mac automatically booted (as I had told it to do). I was glad that the power was restored so quickly and merrily went back to my Mac.

This is where some weirdness comes in.

My dock and finder preferences were reset to factory default, almost like the pRAM was zapped. I spent some time getting things back to how I like it, and now all is dandy... Except the one problem that keeps this from being a happy ending: my trash no longer empties. #$%^! I have tried a reboot and the problem persists. I guess I could try zapping pram, or creating a new Library. Are there any other things I could try?

try BatChmod

http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/

under the BatChmod menu, you can 'force empty trash'

you can also do this in the terminal, but i think this is easier, especially if you don't know the unix commands.

woo-hoo!!!! 800 posts!!!

That is true, I can use BatChmod - and I am familiar with the unix chmod command as well... I just want to be able to empty the trash like everyone else!

you mean even after you chmod the trash, it's still the only way to empty it?

the last time i couldn't empty the trash, and i did this, the trash emptying went back to normal, no need for terminal.

what's the error that comes up when you try to empty the trash?

have you tried repairing permissions?

I can't empty my Trash either, even after using BatChmod. The files are from my FireWire had drive.

sudo rm -f the files, if you know how. If not, don't touch the command.

Run a disk repair program over the drive - there's probably some minor directory damage, and maybe run a permission fix.

Tried all the utilities here, and still have a file "in use" that won't go away...
I just had to hide it somewhere.

I couldn't get mine to delete either. I just ended up trashing them in OS 9.

Yeah, I had a file from hell in OS X that would refuse to be emptied from its trash, so I dragged it onto the desktop and re-booted into OS 9 and put it in the trash there & emptied it no problem!

hmm...that's strange. i recently had the same problem with a folder full of stuff that was "in use", i dropped the folder into BatChmod, unlocked all the files, trashed it, and emptied. no problems.
