My brother just got his new Dell ( I set up a rendevous network to transfer all the files of his from my 12" PB to his Dell.

After using it for a little bit I came to realize why I love the Mac so much.

He got it for $699 and it included:

1.8 Ghz P4
128 MB RAM
30 GB HD
CD-RW (24X)
CD-ROM
Integrated Intel Graphics
17" Monitor

After working it out 1.8 GHz is 60% of the fastest Pentium available. I think Apple would sell a boatload of these:

Mini-Tower (1 PCI Slot)

867 Mhz G4 (60% of 1.42 Ghz)
256K L2 Cache
128 MB RAM
30 GB HD
Combo Drive
ATI Radeon with 16 MB VRAM

17" Apple Studio Display (the old school clear CRT types)

Price: $699-$799

The ONLY reason my brother didn't get a Mac is because of the price. Apple should offer something like this on the low end instead of 3 year old iMacs.
iMac Core 2 Duo 20" 2.16 Ghz //1.5 GB RAM // 250 GB HD
Powerbook G4 1.25 Ghz // 1 GB RAM // 80 GB HD // Backlit Keyboard
iPod Video 30 GB / White

The eMac is about as close as you are going to get. You get more stuff and more importantly you get a MAC running OS X.

I don't think Apple could squeeze out margins large enough to make building $700 computers worth it, because they don't do anywhere near the volume that Dell does. The only reason the iMac is still around is to keep the education market happy.

$999
700MHz PowerPC G4
128MB SDRAM
40GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo drive
56K internal modem
17" Display/Integrated Video
Speakers
Ethernet
Firewire

$699
1.8 Ghz P4
128 MB RAM
30 GB HD
CD-RW (24X)
CD-ROM
Integrated Intel Graphics
17" Monitor
MacBook and iMac Core 2 Duo 24"

I'm sorry.

Dell makes some of the worst performing PC boxes out there.... Most tests put them at the bottom of the charts WRT Performance. Not to mention that 128MB is being shared with the video card... He may want to think long and hard and return it and try a locally built clone or another teir-2 vendor.
