I've posted on and on about how I was trying to add memory, and this generic stuff from OWC as well as Fry's hasn't been working (256 MB dimms, either pc100 or pc133).
I finally appear to have found some that work...
They're the same generic type, except that these dimms I found happen to be about 1/8" higher than all the other dimms I've tried in the BW. The strange thing is that all the dimms are supposed to be equivalent, they have the same SKU number at fry's, from the same company and all. they physical height just happens to differ.
I tried the usual test of starting up about 15 applications at once (first I had 2 256 dimms inside),
process viewer in oS X said I was using up about 75% of the memory. The computer did not have a kernel panic.
I found memory of similar size and now have memory maxed out to a gig.
Anybody have an explanation for this strange occurence?

^ how did the bad memory end up fubar-ing your g3?
I was about ready to bite the bullet but luckily this worked out, I guess. *knock on wood*
The whole problem with dropping $50 a module is that upgrading the g3 is already a hella dumb idea. I'm always being berated by my friend about how I should be investing in a sawtooth or a new 867 mhz machine. I upgrade this computer b/c I am stubborn and I'm crazy about the aesthetics of the case. It's a shame you just can't rip out all the BW g3's guts and put in all g4 components.

I had no problems with memory modules of slightly different heights in my B&W. About 1/8 of an inch or so difference sounds about like what I had and it was unnerving at first, but with no problems and all RAM recognized I didn't give it a second thought. But it was all quallity-branded RAM.

Same here. I have different height ram in mine. No problems at all.

I don't think the factor is necessarily height, it doesn't make any sense. But there must be something different that sets it apart from the others I bought previously.
I have no complaints. The memory is maxed out. I'm not changing a damn thing anymore with it after this small mess.

well if i rememnber correclty...i installed the fry's ram..the computer booted up (os9.2.2) got to the desktop, then it froze. did a maunual restart..didnt get the start up sound...kind of just stayed black, couldnt open the cd drive, or nothing. tried different things and lucky i knew some dude that works at a college and he hooked me up with a new mobo from a B&W. yeah i like my B&W and it makes no sense in buying a new mac right now...they are just not as applealing as when i bought this B&W back in 1999...back then the G3's were keeping up with the intel chips and i truly felt that my mac was (hardware wise) on par with the pee cee's..now well..we all know how it has turned out besides with 1gb of ram OSX is not too shaby on my trusty B&W heck i can even play WCIII decently. hopefull apple ang ibm get their act together ...
