I'm looking at upgrading my powerbook g4 400 with one of the new 17" gigz. Besides dead pixels one thing I would like to avoid with the imac is noise particularly hard drive whine. My pbook hd whines constantly and it is annoying. I read over on the apple forums that the new model uses an ibm drive which is noisy. Previous models used seagate hd's that had lubed ball bearings to make them almost silent. Those who have the latest 17" or if you're in the know please let me know. My hd didn't start whining until about 2 months after purchased it, so it is something that does'nt rear it's ugly head at first.

and please no posts stating that I'm whining

thanks

I used to have my PowerBook G4/400 w/Toshiba drive. It's not that bad. I went to xbench.com and checked out those new 1Ghz iMac. I clicked on 10 of them and they were all using Seagate drive (80GB ST380023A to be exact).

On my new dual 1.25Ghz PowerMac, it comes with a Seagate drive as well. (80GB ST380024A) While reading, it is noiser than my other hard drives inside the PowerMac; Maxtor 60GB 5T060H6 and WesternDigital 120GB 8MB WD1200JB-00CRA1.

I've got one of the new 17" iMacs, and I can confirm it's got the Seagate Drive that Kenneth mentions.
