I have a G4 (AGP graphics) 400MHz running system 9.04. I have recently acquired a set of G4 system restore CDs through Ebay in order to upgrade to system X via 9.1 etc. However I repeatedly get the message that ''this configuration not supported on this computer'' and I can get no further. What am I doing wrong? or is there a way round this problem?

Well, you got tricked. You can't use these CDs for your PowerMac since apparantly they're for another PowerMac and have some kind of hardware check.
What you need are not system restore CDs but a copy of Mac OS X 10.2.

Thank you for your ideas , however I am really more interested in stabilising my system 9 than in having system X. I have tried using the downloadable upgrades (twice) but could get no further than 9.1--The 9.2 international English downgrade proved impossible and I was stuck in 9.1 with unresolvable printer conflicts (Sounds almost psychological !) I even tried to buy Jaguar but was told that it did not come with any solution to my System 9 problems i.e. system 9.1.or later. When I saw these system restore Discs on sale at Ebay I thought that a G4 was a G4 and shelled out 30 pounds only to be disappointed. However I have heard that there is away of using them using some kind of file-extracting software.

How could I know that you're English Never mind, now I do

Anyway, I have two things to tell ya. First, going further than 9.1 won't do you any good. All updates further than 9.1 were written to run better in Classic. And second, we need to know more about your PowerMac in order to help you.

I have a power mac G4 ( AGP Graphics) running system 9.04 International English 400 Mhz 704 MB memory (virtual on @705MB)
ROM version $ 77D.45F6
Boot Rom version $0004.28f1
Mac OS Version 3.7
Internet Explorer 5.1.6
External ISDN Modem Vigor 128
Printer Epson 760 color Stylus
External Floppy drive
+ Zip Disc
+flatbed Scanner (SCSI)
+USB x4 serial BUS
+ Lacie CD Burner (External)(Firewire)

I encounter numerous ''freezes'' especially ( but not exclusively) after using the printer, and again more especially in connection with the Browser.

On disc (but unusable) I have system 10.1

On the two occasions I upgraded to 9.1-- printer became completely unusable. Was told that it was the fault of ATM suitcase but exhaustive searches failed to detect any such 'being' or 'Beast' on my Hard Drive.
Is there anything else that you need to know?

I think you may need the latest Firmware for your Mac, check out www.apple.com for the files and instruction to flash your firmware.

What you really need is a retail 9.1 disk. The 9.04--9.1 online upgrade was weird for a lot of people. (there's no practical advantage to 9.2 except for Classic mode in OS X)

Ditto on checking your firmware.
ATM is a Control Panel (System Folder/Control Panels), but that's probably not the problem with printing. Check Epson's site for updated printer drivers, too.
