100gb (or above)
7200rpm
8mb buffer
ATA 100 (or better)

Personally I use western digital drives, but other people seem to like maxtor and ibm as well.

Make sure you also store your music and project files on a non-system drive.

I suppose either will work fine. LOL I have the stock IBM 60 gig on the ATA/100 bus on mine and 2 80 gigs on the ATA/66 bus. Both 8 meg caches, one from Western Digital and the other a Maxtor fluid bearing drive. They've all been fine so far, just one bit of advice. When you do put it in, put the new drive on the ATA/66 bus to equalize the load on both busses. Putting them both on the ATA/100 is nice but will limit the available bandwidth for both drives. Also make sure you plug in the ATA/66 cable to the motherboard, it's not plugged in by default.

The Western Digital 8mb buffer hard drive seems to be a better choice nowadays, I'm using their 120GB model since Aug/2002 without any problem. They are the only maker to offer 3-year warranty except you want to go for the MaXLine from Maxtor.

I swear by my Seagate 80 gig cuda, snaged it last year for around 120 (a deal at the time) it got rave reviews on tomshardware.com. and to tell you the truth i can barely hear this thing seak. when i first fired her up i didn't even notice it. Real big differance from my 20 gig maxtor (5400). but now if i really listen for it i can hear a slight squeaking, of the drive accessing.

I personally am only going to buy from Seagate from now on.

I GOT WASTED WITH PHIL SHERRY!!!
