Hi.

My monitor died recently and it is in the repair shop.

The store has loaned me one of their monitors. I am surprised that I am still experiencing flickering and shacking of the screen sometimes. I thought it was my old monitor but now I suspect it is the videocard.

Could anyone confirm this for me or is there a way to test it?

Now, if it needs to be replaced, what is the cheapest card that would do the job that I need?

I use my computer for database, word processing, graphic and web design. I do not use the computer for games at all.

Would really appreciate any advice.

(Currently there is a rage128 in my computer which is a G4, 350mhz tower.)

Thanks,

Jay

Which G4 is it? The one with the AGP graphics port or the one with the PCI graphics port? If it's AGP, the cheapest, readily available card would probably be the RADEON 9000, unless you can find someone selling the original RADEON, but I believe that's been EOL for a bit. If it's PCI, the RADEON 7000 would be the card to get.

I just checked the specs on the ATI radeon 7000 32MB DDR Mac Version.

It sais the minimum requirement are OS 9.2.1 or OSX 10.1.

The problem is that although I have both of those systems on this computer, I also run a Japanese OS 8.6 and a Japanese and English OS 9.1.

The OS 9.1 English is my main system and I dont want to abandon it as it has been running smoothely ever since I installed it way back when.

Could someone explain to me why a videocard has minimum system requirements. Probably an ignorant question but.......

Cheers,

Jay

taka a look at
http://www.wegenermedia.com/ati128.htm
Here you have plenty of cheap cards several of these will work in 8.6 there is even some old PCI cards for all fo five dollars that probably work in OS 7 as well on there garage sale page

Have you ensured that the power cables and the video cable is not to close? I have had some flickering that was reduced or removed by moving the cables around? If that work it totaly free, excluding my consultant fee

What is the refresh rate set at? If it's 75 Hz or below, you will see flicker. Set it at 85 or above and it will look fine- if your monitor supports it.

If you're having troubles with flickering and shaking, you should look into nearby magnetic fields, and at your power. Power problems can be helped by using a UPS, while magnetic field problems are most easily solved by using an LCD flat panel instead of a CRT.
