Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Looks nice but isn't the bulk of the noise coming from the Power Supply? My 120MM fan kicks in occasionally but not a lot, it's the constant "whine" from the power supply fans that I hear all the time.

Verax replaced the 60 mm fans on the PSU with 65 mm fans if their own design. Total noise output from a modified MDD is said to be around 20 dB. Wow.

I think it's around 65db or something. There was a movie posted comparing the new FW 800 MDDs to a Sawtooth and the amount of "air" noise was less on the MDD. But the frequency was louder which is where the noise is coming from. You can to g4noise.com and read up on the whole issue. If they did manage to get it to 20 that's pretty good.

I believe the noise is 20 db LOWER than the stock PSU.... which would be 40-something decibels.

20 db total noise is unrealistic for a PSU. The quietest I've seen are high 20's to low 30's

Well it's odd that they focus on the large 120mm fan more than the PS fans. Going from a larger fan to a smaller one is also an odd move to lower noise! Hmmm...
And making the CPU fan housing out of copper would be tastier.

They only talk about a new quiet solution for the dual processor mdd. What about the single 1 GHz G4? It also needs to be a lot more quiet.

On their products page they state that PCs with their fans have been measured at 20 db.
I wonder why Apple puts no effort in making silent Macs any more.

Not really. Large fans don't have to spin as fast to move the same amount of air, and a lot of the noise problem has as much to do with the frequency of hte noise as with the amplitude: 40dB at 200Hz is much more tolerable than 40dB at 4000Hz - most people are more comfortable with a purr than with a whine.
Also, the PSU fans in the rev 1 MDDs could apparently touch the case, causing a really unpleasant buzz.

Apparantly, Verax is showing one of these silent PowerMacs at CeBit and given that I'm going to Hannover this weekend, I'll try to gather some additional information about it.

That's exactly my point.
Going from a larger fan to a smaller one is also an odd move to lower noise!
As you pointed out, the noise generated by a slower frequency yet larger fan is generally more tolerable. Thus, odd choice to replace a larger fan with a smaller one (as they seem to have done with the 120mm: "Replacement of the 120 mm fan with an 80 mm Verax fan") when the object is noise "reduction."
Also, the PSU fans in the rev 1 MDDs could apparently touch the case, causing a really unpleasant buzz.
True. I plan on using dual sided tape or thin rubber "fabric" to cushion the vibration between the PS (and fans) and the case. Also a good idea for the drive bracket, as they are mounted in a simlar fashion that may allow for some vibration.

will this kit be quieter than the new MDD G4's or just the older ones?
I'm getting the new psu fan and case fan replacement kit from apple, so I'm wondering if it's worth it to get this other kit.
Will it be *that* much quieter?
