I have just purchased a new Pioneer DVR-105 drive to put in my 533/G4 desktop. This new drive is faster with all types of media than the stock drive in my machine. Is there any reason I should put the old drive in the lower slot as a slave drive? (or can I?) If I just replace the existing drive with the new 105, which would be set as master, and I should be off and running. Right?? Do I need to do any firmware updrades or anything? I couldn't find any that applied to my machine on Apple's web site. Thanks for any information.

It will only fit in the top slot.
You need to remove your current drive (and send it to me ) and put the new DVD drive in it's spot.

Like Scott said, you only have one drive bay of that size (5.25".) So I'd make sure that the drive boots CDs before I let it live in that bay. You can put one or the other outside your case in a firewire enclosure (example link) if you want to use two for some reason. Another issue might be if it works with iDVD. Some don't unless they are flashed or something I think.

XLR8yourMac is a great source for adding stuff to your Mac.

Good Luck and enjoy the toy.

Thats the sad part. I have both the 867 and the 867 Dual. The 867 Dual is easy as it has the extra slot for an add in optical drive. The 867 would have to have some mods done in order to get two optical drives in it. I have heard of it being done but, for me I would pass. How about an external case for the old drive and the new one in your computer?????? At least then you could have both if thats what you want. I have been real happy having two optical drives. Makes it real easy to work with!!!!!
