Need help - can not load OS 9.0.4

I was given an 8500/120 which came with a StarMax? (Motorolla restore disk OS 7.6)

Hardware is as follows:
604 processor (waiting for a 604e/180)
2 GB Seagate SCSI HD
256 MB memory (just upgraded slots A4=B4=128 MB each DIMM's)
waiting on 2 - 1MB VRAM sticks to upgrade video

I can boot from the OS 9.0.4 disk that is a silver installation disk (not restore disk) for a G4 cube. I initialize the disk, check with first aid and get good report. Start OS install and file copying begins. Get to a certain point and recieve error "this disk can not run on this computer". Selections are grayed out in the "erase disk and install" "restore to disk", etc. and I do not know what this means. The readme file says that one would receive an error if system has an UW (ultrawide) SCSI drive and should flash firmware to correct? If I am booting OS 9 from CD with no problems is not being able to install the OS to the hard drive a hardware issue? or should I be installing from a retail OS 9 CD?

To find out if it is a hardware problem you need to rule out other things ... try a retail version of OS 9 if possible.

It's probably not a hardware issue. Alot of system disks that came with Macs during the MacOS 9 era, were made specifically for the Mac model they came with and will not work with other models. Try a retail version of MacOS 9.
