I see that the 17" stock imacs only come with 256mb ram. I was going to purchase the 17" stock and then just add the extra ram myself (I can get it cheaper and have installed memory in pc's many times)

Also, this way, if I *need* to return the product unopened I will be able to. Resellers (mac warehouse that I'm buying from) won't let you return the product if it has be modified or opened (which it would have to be to install the ram)

I have however, noticed on the resellers website that apple "recommends" that the memory be installed by a apple professional technician or else the warranty is void? Is this really the case?! Maybe I misread or misunderstood? That would seem very ludicris to me.

Yes...here it is...I found it. It was actually from mac mall...

"The factory installed memory is a 256MB 184 pin DIMM. The open memory slot is a 200 pin SO DIMM slot. According to Apple, the factory installed 184 pin DIMM slot can only be upgraded by an authorized Apple service technician."

So what the hell does that really mean?? I means I can go ahead and install my own memory in the 200 pin DO DIMM slot without any repercusions right?

Yes, there is one normal slot in the bottom of the iMac to stick one stick of RAM into. I guess I can't definitively say this about the new ones, but the old 17" iMacs had this setup. One RAM slot that you can put RAM into.

pamelah:

There are two slots for memory. The factory installed slot and the user accessible slot. You can add memory to the user slot with no problems. However, upgrading the factory slot yourself, could void the warranty.

Does that make sense?
