Hi all! I'm a visitor from LittleWhiteDog and since we don't have a lot of Mac experience over there I thought this would be the BEST Mac place to ask my question.

My neighbor has a bunch of old Macs and some of them have the cache slot empty. The Macs he has look something like the Performa 5000 series.

Question: Will the pipeline level 2 cache that was popular with the Intel TX chipset would work in that slot or does it have to be a specific type?

I've been able to find 256k pipeline cache for the PC all day long on eBay but nothing that mentions the older Macs.

I don't know what exactly models he has at this moment but I should be able to find out by tomorrow. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

If you have any cache chips for sale, I'd be interested as well.

You can find technical specs for older PowerMacs here:

http://www.info.apple.com/support/ap...macintosh.html

Follow the link at the bottom if it's not a PowerMac (for example, if it's a Performa).

The specs I checked did not give much info on the optional L2. You can download full manuals for 5000-series models here:

Thanks for the info. After looking at the slot, it looks like the chip has to have 2 indexes. The ones for PCs only have 1 so it looks like I'm on a treasure hunt now. Anyone know of a place I could hunt some down at? Thanks in advance!

A small box in my basement has at least 1 that I pulled out of my 8500 when I went to 1MB for it. There might be others.
What is the exact pincount and layout? I've got a ton of odd ram chips in that box.

I'm not exactly sure as it's my neighbor's comps. I haven't been able to get in touch with him to get the exact bits of info about the cache. Will repost when I do... Thanks!

I've got a bunch of 5500 cache chips lying around. I can take some pics if you need them, but they're not for sale.
