After a while the damn things does boot, and seems OK.

This happens from the low-level formatted HD the machine came with, and also a second drive I swapped in.

Is this Open Firmware? Something needs fixing, but what/how? This is unlike any Mac problem I've ever had...?!

Here is the answer to your question, booboo:

Hold down Command Option O F at start-up

You'll drop into Open Firmware.

At the prompt type:


set-defaults <return>

reset-all <return>


Something the previous owner installed must have tampered with the firmware on this machine. Linux? OS X server?
