Well I'm a semi recent switcher and couldn't be more than happy with my 17inch/1ghz iMac. I'm putting another 512 MB chip in (currently at the stock 256 MB) and although I'm sure that will give me a performance boost, I thought it would be good to get everyone's collective knowledge and see what other things we could do to make things more snappy.

Well I guess my first question would be how can I disable stuff running in the background permantly and what stuff is it safe to do this to?

I'd try the OSX forum for speed tips.

PS: The easiest way to boost you speed 3000% is to run OS9.
